What is NAP?

In one sentence

NAP stands for name, address and phone number: the core details that identify your business online.

Why it matters for your business

Search engines, maps apps and AI assistants check your business details across many websites: your own site, your Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles and review sites. When your name, address and phone number are the same everywhere, they can trust that the details are correct. When they don’t match, it creates doubt, and customers can end up calling an old number or driving to an old address.

You’ll sometimes see NAPW, which adds your website address to the list.

Example

These look similar to a person, but to a computer they’re three different versions of one business:

  • Northside Plumbing, 12 Oak St. Suite 4, (555) 010-0100
  • Northside Plumbing LLC, 12 Oak Street #4, 555-010-0199
  • North Side Plumbing, 12 Oak St, (555) 010-0100

How to check or improve it

  1. Choose one exact version of your name, address and phone number.
  2. Use it on your website, especially in the footer and on your contact page.
  3. Update your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Facebook and key directories to match.
  4. Search for your old address and old phone numbers and fix any listings that still show them.
