Why it matters for your business
For some searches, especially questions, Google shows an AI Overview above the regular results. It answers the question directly and links to the websites it used. Being one of those linked sources can bring visitors who already trust you, and being left out means customers see other businesses first.
AI Overviews only appear when Google’s systems judge they’ll be helpful, so many searches don’t show one.
What Google says
Google says AI Overviews are built on its normal search ranking and quality systems. There’s no separate sign-up, special file or special markup needed. To be eligible, a page has to be indexed and able to appear in search with a snippet. Google also says you don’t need to split your content into small pieces or write in a special way for AI.
How to check or improve it
- Make sure your important pages are indexed (check in Google Search Console).
- Write clear, helpful answers to the questions your customers ask, based on real experience.
- Support your text with your own photos and, where useful, video.
- Check Search Console’s Performance report. Google includes AI feature traffic in your overall search data, and has been rolling out a separate report for its generative AI features.
