What is Indexing?

In one sentence

Indexing is when a search engine reads a page and adds it to its index, the huge library it searches to answer queries.

Why it matters for your business

A page that isn’t indexed can’t appear in search results, no matter how good it is. Search engines work in three steps: crawling (finding the page), indexing (reading and storing it) and ranking (deciding where it appears for a search). New websites often have pages that haven’t been indexed yet.

Example

You launch a new page for “emergency plumbing” on Monday. Until Google crawls and indexes it, it won’t show up in Google, even if someone searches for exactly those words with your business name.

How to check or improve it

  1. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google for a quick look at which pages are indexed.
  2. Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console for an exact answer about a specific page.
  3. Submit your sitemap in Search Console.
  4. Remove accidental “noindex” tags and check your robots.txt file.
  5. Make every page genuinely useful and different from your other pages. Thin or duplicated pages may be crawled but left out of the index.
